Iran: The Neocons Are At It Again

by Ralph Nader (Jan. 11, 2012)

Recently, Iran has experienced mysterious cyber sabotage, drone violations of its air space, the slaying of its nuclear scientists and the blowing up of its military sites, including a major missile installation. Israeli and American officials are not trying too hard to conceal this low level warfare.

Israel military historian--strategist Martin van Creveld said in 2004, that Iranians "would be crazy not to build nuclear weapons considering the security threats they face." Three years later he stated that "the world must now learn to live with a nuclear Iran the way we learned to live with a nuclear Soviet Union and a nuclear China....We Israelis have what it takes to deter an Iranian attack. We are in no danger at all of having an Iranian nuclear weapon dropped on us...thanks to the Iranian threat, we are getting weapons from the U.S. and Germany."

Iran trumpets nuclear ability at second location

The New York Times

David E. Sanger

January 9, 2012

In saying that the United States did not have any evidence that Iran was seeking to develop a nuclear weapon, Mr. Panetta was hewing closely to the conclusions the often fractious American intelligence agencies agreed upon in 2007 and again in 2010. Two National Intelligence Estimates, designed to reflect the consensus of the intelligence community, concluded that Iranian leaders had made no political decision yet to build an actual weapon. Instead, they described a series of steps that would take Iran right up to that line — and position it to assemble a weapon fairly quickly if a decision to do so were made.

Media AWOL in exposing ineptitude of the Iraq War

The Charlotte Observer

By Edward Wasserman, McClatchy Newspapers

Published: Thursday, Jan. 05, 2012

Out! Out! Damn spot.

The only public institution that could initiate the kind of broad-gauged examination that a disaster of this magnitude (the Iraq War) demands is the media. From the strategic folly, to the use of torture, the destruction of civilian life, the profiteering, the political miscalculation - the years of ineptitude need to be exposed and explained, and those responsible made to answer.

Lamentably, sabre-rattling and war drums resound anew within our land (January 2012), stirring a crisis du jour - Iran posing the imminent threat.

If the media's core civic duty is to serve as a check on power, surely no abuse of power calls forth that duty more urgently than the needless infliction of war.

Alas, let us permit others to live in Peace as we wish for ourselves.

Remembering Norwood’s ferry boat tragedy from 100 years ago

This is a reprint of a circa 1952 Stanly News and Press article by Fred Morgan, who interviewed Greeley Forrest, a participant in the rescue of Col. Myers during the tragic Blalock Ferry accident on the Pee Dee River near Norwood during the raging flood of August 3, 1909.
